Incident Recovery Procedures
For manufacturing businesses, the cost of production downtime during an IT or security incident is immediately calculable and frequently alarming. A facility producing at several thousand euros per hour loses that value for every hour of downtime — whether caused by ransomware, hardware failure, network disruption, or accidental data deletion. The total cost of a significant incident includes not just direct revenue loss during downtime but the cost of incident response, customer remediation for missed deliveries, regulatory notification, and long-term reputational damage.
The technical foundation of recovery capability is the backup architecture — and this is where manufacturing businesses most frequently discover, during an actual incident, that their assumptions were wrong. Backups configured but never tested. Recovery times estimated rather than measured. Backup copies stored on the same network as the primary systems they are intended to protect. A backup architecture review conducted before an incident identifies and corrects these failures at a small fraction of the cost of discovering them when recovery is actually required.
The human and procedural dimension is as important as the technical infrastructure, and more frequently underprepared. When an incident occurs, people face time pressure, incomplete information, and organisational stress. Without a prepared response plan defining who makes which decisions, who communicates with which stakeholders, and who has authority to take which actions, the response is improvised. Improvised incident responses are slower, more expensive, and more likely to generate additional failures than planned ones.
Testing recovery procedures is the most neglected and most valuable element of recovery preparedness. An untested recovery plan is, at best, a hypothesis — and hypotheses in incident management are dangerous. Testing reveals gaps in backup coverage not visible from documentation. It measures actual recovery times — almost universally discovering that reality takes longer than estimates. It builds the organisational familiarity that makes a real incident feel like a difficult exercise rather than an unprecedented crisis.
